Following the Flow: Studying the Temporal Dynamics of Conscious Experience

Conscious experience unfolds continuously across multiple temporal scales. My research seeks to understand how brain dynamics generate this ongoing flow and how external temporal structures shape it, combining computational neuroscience, naturalistic paradigms, and multimodal neuroimaging.

I first present our work showing that temporal irreversibility of neural activity is a robust signature of consciousness, suggesting that conscious brain activity is intrinsically asymmetric in time. Building on this framework, I investigate how music structures experience. Using EEG, inter-subject correlation, and complexity measures during music listening under different states of consciousness, I examine how neural dynamics synchronize with the temporal organization of naturalistic stimuli and how this process is modulated by psilocybin.

Finally, I show how these principles motivate two emerging research directions: understanding how structured movement practices (5Rhythms®) organize emotional experience across longer timescales, and translating these concepts into multimodal biomarkers (EEG, fMRI, PET and physiology) for detecting residual consciousness in patients with disorders of consciousness. Together, these studies aim to establish a unified framework for understanding consciousness as a dynamic interaction between brain, body, and environment
