Preliminary study on the implementation of a sensorimotor synchronization assessment protocol for adults.

This study a preliminary administration of an SMS assessment protocol an sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) in adults. The study utilized rhythmic finger-tapping tasks synchronized with isochronous auditory stimuli and tempo/period perturbations (both abrupt and gradual). Video recordings of the tapping sessions were processed using MediaPipe Hand Landmarker for motion tracking (combined with audio event detection) to automatically extract spatial and temporal synchronization metrics, providing complementary quantitative measures alongside clinical observation. The detected stimulus and tapping events were represented as paired time series and compared on a trial-by-trial basis to quantify stimulus–response asynchrony and temporal variability. Preliminary results from individual participants were consistent with synchronization patterns reported in the literature, including negative mean asynchrony (a tendency toward anticipation) and millisecond-scale temporal variability. Distinct behavioral patterns were observed among participants, ranging from stable delays with higher precision at faster tempos to pronounced anticipation, as well as varying levels of stability and variability across conditions. These findings demonstrate the tool's potential for characterizing individual differences in sensorimotor synchronization performance, both for research and for the clinical monitoring of music therapy users.
